History
The House of Zakat, Infaq, and Shodaqoh Universitas Gadjah Mada (RUMAH ZIS UGM) was established on September 22, 2008 (22nd of Ramadan 1429 H) and inaugurated by the Rector of UGM, Prof. Sudjarwadi, M.Eng., Ph.D., at Balairung UGM. RUMAH ZIS UGM was born from the awareness of the UGM academic community to accommodate the importance of zakat in Islamic law practiced by Muslim and Muslimah within UGM. The presence of this institution aims to optimize UGM's role in society, particularly in the field of social and humanitarian efforts.
The inauguration of RUMAH ZIS UGM was marked by the appointment of its board of management, witnessed by the Supervisory Council, which included Prof. Dr. Ahmad Mursidi, Prof. Dr. Ichlasul Amal, and Dr. Chairil Anwar. In 2013, through a Rector's decree, RUMAH ZIS UGM was developed into one of UGM's community service institutions under the auspices of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), which is now known as the Directorate of Community Service (DPkM) Universitas Gadjah Mada.
In October 2016, RUMAH ZIS UGM was officially designated as a Zakat Collection Unit (UPZ) by the National Zakat Agency of the Yogyakarta Special Region Province (BAZNAS DIY), following the issuance of National Zakat Agency Regulation (PERBAZNAS) Number 2 of 2016. At that time, the Chairman of BAZNAS RI, Prof. Dr. Bambang Sudibyo, M.B.A., Ak., CA., who is also a Professor of Economics at UGM, directed RUMAH ZIS UGM to become a pioneer campus-based Zakat Collection Unit and a model for other campuses in Indonesia.
RUMAH ZIS UGM routinely collects and manages zakat, infaq, shodaqoh, and waqf (ZISWAF) funds and distributes them to eligible recipients, focusing particularly on the eight categories (asnaf) mentioned in the Quran. The distribution of ZISWAF funds prioritizes areas around UGM’s campus in Bulaksumur, Yogyakarta. These community service activities are integrated into UGM's broader social programs under the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) and are named the Inspiring Bulaksumur Urban Community (IBUC) Program. This program directly involves students in community service activities.
Vision
